Hello,

I've spent many years now helping people make web pages for their small business projects. One thing I've noticed is many people (not all) underestimate the importance of marketing when making a web site.

I know a great book that could help you get in the right frame of mind:

The book is a bit older but really gets you thinking about how to communicate in a way that is:

Minimal
Friendly and positive
Witty
Projects into the mind of the people you want to reach.

When you first start playing with your web site try to express your whole concept around one image and two lines of text.

Once you have this "mini" version of your site you can show it around and test it will clients and friends. Once the mini site works you can build the bigger site around it.

This is a very good way to work because you can go through alot of versions very fast and test them fast. Also everyone in the world is in a rush so if you have two seconds of their time as they first look at your site this is the way you need to be thinking.

btw thanks Gareth for recommending this book to me.

Hope this is helpful,
Michael
